The Friends have lost a friend! Mr. Douglas Lee Bush passed away on Saturday November 3rd, 2018.
Doug was a wonderful Friend of the Library. He worked with the Friends in many capacities over the years, and served as President and Treasurer. When we lost the book sale chair, he took on the position and spearheaded book sales for many years. When the city started the Downtown Market. the staff began selling books and doing programming monthly. Eventually the booth became a Friends responsibility and most months of the year, Doug would load up his truck with books, tent and tables and put in 5 hours manning the market booth. He spoke to many friends and made new ones during all those hours. Doug was our historian – he could talk about the library when it was in the museum, when it moved to the current location and how the funds and planning for the 2001 addition came about. If there was a question of who, when or why about the library, building or collection, Doug would be the person to fill us in. Without him, our historian and anchor is gone. It wasn’t a specific event, or project that made Doug such an integral part of life at the Hartsville Library, it was his visits and his caring. When he came in the doors, he took the time to say hello to the staff. He introduced himself to new ones and got to know them through subsequent visits. Unless he was under the weather, he stopped in almost weekly to see if anything was going on. He made a great sounding board for staff ideas and brought opportunities to our attention. His quiet manner and inclusive nature made everyone he spoke with, his friend. The Friends are honored that he chose the organization for memorial donations and will find the perfect way to keep his spirit alive.
